The common words we heard a lot nowadays are about “work - life balance”, but I would rather use another word are “life domains”. Life domains represent the main areas of functioning in an individual’s life, e.g. work, health, education, leisure-time, family, friends… This means work is just one aspect of life and there are many “segments” of reality. Have you ever wonder yourself what is the most important thing in your life?
Honestly it is hard to find an answer for this question because our live is likely a river and we are captains who sail our life boat on that river. That means what we aim for that might change time by time. Instead of that question, we might consider these following questions: At this present, what is the most important thing that means to us? We sail the boat through other life domains or just a single direction? How satisfied are we on this journey?
Perhaps your career is on track but you have no longer time with your family and friends. You can find trapped somewhere and the feeling of “unbalance” come up just to say “hello” to you. If this kind of feeling showed up, you would need to check within yourself whether any of your personal needs left behind. Avoidance or ignore could drive you someday no longer satisfied with your quality of life.
The Wheel of Life - a well known tool could be helpful for you to assess your life satisfaction and what need your attention.
Step 1: List out your 10 most important life domains (i.e. work, income, health, family, relationships, leisure…).
Step 2: Fill these 10 life domains into the wheel of life in blank below.
Step 3: Rate your satisfaction for each of the identified life domains from 1 to 10.
Step 4: Connect the lines to form an inner wheel as the sample and take an overview on this wheel.
Step 5: Reflect and ask yourself “Which domains draw your attention?”, “What can you do to raise your satisfaction in this domain and why?”
The more honest you are, the more you will find your true status at this present. The last question you might ask yourself is what you will do differently to improve this status.
Hope it finds you helpful.
